Cardstock Shadow Puppet Theater
In groups of five, students cut out cardstock silhouettes mounted on sticks and create a one-minute shadow scene behind a lit-up sheet. The activity builds group creativity, precise handling, and an understanding of how distance from the light changes shadow size.
How to play
- Set up the screen: a sheet stretched between two wall bars, a lamp 10 feet behind, and the audience in front. Show that near the lamp the shadow is big and blurry, and against the sheet it's small and sharp (3 min).
- In groups of five, each group plans a three-part story (beginning, problem, ending) and its characters (4 min).
- Cutting (8 min): each student cuts out at least one silhouette or set piece and tapes it to a craft stick, seated at a table.
- Rehearsal in turns (8 min): each group gets 90 seconds behind the screen to test entrances, exits, and size changes while the others prepare.
- Show (7 min): each group performs its one-minute scene with someone narrating or doing sound effects, and the audience names the clearest moment.
Rules
- Only the performing group is behind the screen.
- Scissors stay at the work table and are passed closed, handle first.
- Safety: nobody touches or moves the lamp, which can get hot; only the teacher positions it.
Variations
Easier
Hand out pre-cut silhouettes so the group only creates the story and the puppetry.
Standard
Cut, rehearse, and perform a three-moment scene.
Harder
Include a size effect (a character who grows or moves away) and a body shadow combined with the puppets.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student narrates or handles puppets seated, with the screen set at the right height for the chair.
- Visual impairment: the student takes the narrator and sound-effects role, and the group describes each scene to them during rehearsal.
- Fine motor needs: give the student large pre-drawn templates or pre-cut silhouettes to tape onto the stick.
Learning goals
- Create a short story as a group and perform it with shadows.
- Control the distance and movement of puppets to change the shadow.
- Coordinate puppetry, narration, and sound roles.

Teacher tip
Set up the cutting tables away from the screen and only dim the lights during rehearsal and the show so nobody trips while cutting.
