Cardio Tennis: Nonstop Hitting to Music
A racket fitness format in which students hit balls fed nonstop by a partner or the teacher, set to upbeat music, with movement and exercises between shots. Heart rates stay high while students practice forehands, backhands and volleys.
How to play
- Set up 3 courts with a low net or rope at 3 ft and 3 stations per court: a feeder with a basket of balls, a hitting line and an exercise zone with cones.
- 3-minute warm-up with rackets: side shuffles between cones and forehand and backhand shadow swings to the beat.
- Drill 1 (5 min): the feeder tosses easy underhand balls; each student hits a forehand, sprints to tag a cone 5 yards away and returns to the line.
- Drill 2 (5 min): alternating forehand and backhand, two shots in a row per turn, then 5 squats in the exercise zone when leaving the line.
- Drill 3 (5 min): approach the net to volley two balls and backpedal to the baseline; switch feeders every 5 minutes.
- Drill 4 (5 min): quick 2v2 points started from a feed, no serve, rotating every point; 3-minute close walking to collect balls and stretching forearms and shoulders.
Rules
- Nobody steps into the hitting zone until the previous student has finished the swing.
- The feeder feeds only when the next hitter is ready with the racket back.
- Push loose balls to the sides with your foot so nobody steps on them.
Variations
Easier
The feeder lets the ball bounce close to the hitter and the exercises between shots are dropped.
Standard
Four 5-minute drills with movement or an exercise between shots.
Harder
Cut the line to 3 students per station for almost no rest and feed balls farther away.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student hits from a chair with feeds at hip height and no movement required.
- Hearing impairment: the feeder signals drill changes visually by holding the racket up.
- Lower skill level: use slower foam balls and a short-handled racket.
Learning goals
- Keep heart rate high while practicing racket strokes.
- Coordinate footwork with forehand, backhand and volley strokes.
- Learn a racket-based fitness option for an active lifestyle.
