Card Flick Accuracy Stations
A four-station circuit where students flick playing cards with a snap of the wrist, like mini flying discs, into a hat, a box, a hoop, or a floor zone. Students work on accuracy, adjusting force, and beating their own personal best.
How to play
- Set up 4 stations with taped lines: an upside-down hat at 2 m (6 ft), a shoe box at 2.5 m (8 ft), a hoop at 3 m (10 ft), and a 20-in tape square at 3 m for sliding cards along the floor (3 min).
- Teach the technique: card flat between index and middle fingers, arm in front of the chest, and a quick outward wrist snap, like a backhand flying disc throw.
- Make 4 groups of 6. At each station one student throws 10 cards, one counts hits, and the rest collect; roles rotate every turn.
- Everyone records their score. After 3 and a half minutes, blow the whistle and rotate stations (14 min).
- At the end, each student repeats their best station to try to beat their score (1 min).
Rules
- Nobody enters the throwing area until the thrower is done.
- Always throw toward the target from behind the line.
- Each student competes against their own score.
Variations
Easier
Targets at 1 m (3 ft) and any throwing style, including underhand.
Standard
Targets at 2–3 m (6–10 ft), 10 cards, wrist-flick technique.
Harder
Move targets back 1.5 ft each round and alternate hands.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: throw from a chair, with the box or hat on a desk.
- Autism or shyness: preview the circuit on a picture card and stay as counter until ready to throw.
- Skill level: tape several lines (5, 6, and 10 ft) so students choose a distance.
Learning goals
- Adjust force and direction to different distances.
- Coordinate the wrist snap with arm position.
- Track their own score and set a goal to improve it.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Decks of playing cards: 4
- Hat: 1
- Shoe box: 1
- Hula hoop: 1
- Roll of masking tape: 1
Teacher tip
Stress that the spin comes from the wrist, not the arm; accuracy usually improves within minutes. Flatten bent cards beforehand.
