Capture the Flag: Countdown Jail
Two teams guard their scarf and try to bring the other team's scarf back to their half. The jail empties itself with a countdown, so nobody sits out for more than a few seconds.
How to play
- On-field explanation: two halves, a scarf in a hoop at the back of each half, and a two-hoop jail in each corner (4 min).
- First half: anyone tagged in enemy territory goes to jail, counts out loud to 20 and returns to their side along the sideline (8 min).
- Team timeout: one minute to decide defenders, attackers and an attack plan (2 min).
- Second half with rescues: on top of the countdown, a teammate can free a prisoner with a hand slap and both walk back along the sideline (10 min).
- Switch sides and golden point: first team to bring the flag home wins (4 min).
- Wrap-up: which plan worked, and why? (2 min).
Rules
- Tag with a hand on the back or shoulder; never yank the scarf out of someone's hands.
- Nobody stands inside the hoop of their own flag: defend from 3 m away.
- A flag carrier who gets tagged drops it on the spot, and the other team returns it to its hoop.
- Trips back home always go along the sideline at a walk.
Variations
Easier
Count to 10, and add a safe hoop in the middle of the enemy half.
Standard
Count to 20 plus hand-slap rescues.
Harder
The flag only scores if it's carried home and then passed to a teammate on your side.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: frees the team's jail just by reaching it, or guards a hoop with a pool noodle.
- Hearing impairment: use very different pinnie colors and signal start and stop with a flag.
- Contact-shy or less fit students: can be the lookout, who only calls warnings and can't be tagged in their zone.
Learning goals
- Make attacking and defending decisions in a team game.
- Organize roles and a simple strategy.
- Follow the rules without a referee on every play.
Equipment for a class of 25
- pinnies: 15
- cones: 20
- scarves: 2
- hoops: 4
Teacher tip
With 28 students, 14 vs. 14 works if the field is at least 40 × 25 m. Common mistake: the whole team attacks and leaves the flag alone; stop play and ask who's defending.
