Buteyko Control Pause and Light Breathing
Students measure their "control pause" (comfortable seconds without breathing after a normal exhale) and practice the light nasal breathing of the Buteyko method to recover. It builds breath control and self-assessment of recovery.
How to play
- In pairs with a stopwatch (or the wall clock), sit and breathe through the nose for 1 min.
- Control pause: after a normal exhale, pinch the nose and count seconds until the first urge to breathe; let go and breathe calmly. The partner records the time (1 min).
- Light breathing: breathe through the nose taking in less air than usual, feeling a slight, comfortable air hunger, for 3 min with eyes closed.
- Retest the control pause and compare it with the first one; switch roles (2 min).
- Each pair discusses whether the time went up and when they could use light breathing (before bed, during a test) (1 min).
Rules
- The pause ends at the first urge to breathe; don't hold it as long as possible.
- Breathing after the pause should be calm; if you have to gasp, the pause was too long.
- Students with asthma or who feel dizzy do only the light breathing.
Variations
Easier
Do only light nasal breathing for 2 minutes, without measuring the pause.
Standard
Measure the pause before and after 3 minutes of light breathing.
Harder
Log the control pause for two weeks in a spreadsheet or app and analyze the trend.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do it the same way from a chair.
- Visual impairment: the partner quietly calls out the seconds instead of showing them.
- Asthma or anxiety: skip the control pause and focus on gentle nasal breathing.
Learning goals
- Measure a simple indicator of breath control.
- Practice light nasal breathing to lower arousal.
- Compare personal data before and after a recovery technique.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Stress that this isn't a breath-holding contest: the typical mistake is holding as long as possible and then gasping. Always do it seated and never in the pool.
