Build-Up Flash Mob: Dancers Join in Waves
The class prepares a flash mob that starts with a single dancer, then waves of dancers who were blending in with the crowd join in until the whole class is dancing. Students work on cooperation, remembering choreography and staging a performance.
How to play
- Split the class into four waves with colored pinnies: wave 1 (1 student), wave 2 (4), wave 3 (8) and wave 4 (everyone else) (2 min).
- Teach the whole class a routine of four 8-count blocks that loops for the length of the song (10 min).
- Each wave rehearses its entry cue: wave 1 starts alone, wave 2 joins on block 2, wave 3 on block 3 and wave 4 on block 4 (5 min).
- Plan the opening scene: students stroll, chat or tie shoes around the blacktop until their cue, with pinnies off so they don't give themselves away (4 min).
- Rehearse the full flash mob twice: entries, everyone together on the last loop and a quick scatter when the music ends (6 min).
- Record it or perform it for another class and talk about which entry was the biggest surprise (3 min).
Rules
- Each wave enters exactly on its block; jumping in early spoils the surprise.
- Walk, don't run, from the crowd to your dance spot.
- Nobody sits out: students who would rather not stand out can join wave 4, the biggest group.
Variations
Easier
Use only two waves and a routine of two repeated 8-count blocks.
Standard
Use four waves and a looping four-block routine.
Harder
Add a final block performed as a canon by wave and a formation change toward the audience.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student can be wave 1 and start the mob seated, or be in charge of the music and the start cue.
- Shyness or autism: place the student in the last wave surrounded by classmates and preview the entry order with a diagram.
- Coordination level: offer a simplified arm version within each wave for anyone who needs it.
Learning goals
- Memorize and loop a routine without losing the beat.
- Coordinate group entries using the structure of the music.
- Work together to stage a group performance.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music: 1
- speakers: 1
- colored pinnies: 25
Teacher tip
Choose a song with very clear sections. If you perform at recess, let administrators and other staff know ahead of time.
