Build-the-Rules Team Game
Two teams start a passing game with just one rule, and every few minutes they stop to propose and agree by consensus on new rules that make it fairer and more fun. Students practice passing and getting open while learning to respect rules the group agrees on.
How to play
- Set up two fields about 22 × 13 yards with a hoop on the ground at each end and make four teams of 6, two per field.
- Only one starting rule: a team scores when a player catches the foam ball inside the other team's hoop. Play 4 minutes like that.
- First pause (2 min): each team proposes one new rule to make the game fairer or more fun, and it passes only if both teams agree.
- Play another 4 minutes with the approved rules and repeat the pause. There will be 4 playing periods and 3 pauses in all (about 22 minutes).
- If two proposals clash, the teacher mediates by asking what problem each one is trying to solve.
- Wrap-up (3 min): each field explains its final rules and the class compares them. Which rule improved the game the most?
Rules
- A rule only takes effect if both teams accept it.
- No rule may allow contact, pushing, or leaving anyone out.
- Once approved, a rule is followed even if it hurts your team.
Variations
Easier
The teacher offers a list of five possible rules and the teams choose from it.
Standard
Teams invent and agree on a new rule at each pause.
Harder
Each new rule must be proposed by a different team member and written on cardstock.
Adaptations
- A student with limited mobility can be the team spokesperson during pauses or have a safe zone where the ball cannot be taken.
- Shy students may propose their rule in writing or quietly to their captain.
- For more skilled students, require at least one rule to include a skill challenge, such as a bounce pass or a pass with the non-dominant hand.
Learning goals
- Pass and get open in a team game.
- Propose, negotiate, and agree on rules by consensus.
- Respect agreed rules even when they are not your own.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 2
- hoops: 4
- pinnies: 12
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
The first agreement is usually slow, and someone will propose a rule just to win; let the other team turn it down and let students figure it out. The best rules can be reused in later lessons.
