Build on the Beat: Eight-Count Acrosport
Groups of three learn to build and break down stunts to an eight-count musical structure: set, climb, hold and come down. Students work on rhythm, group timing and the base for a future acrosport routine.
How to play
- Groups of three on mats with music that has a clear, moderate beat. Count the eight counts out loud and explain the rule: 1-2 set up, 3-4 climb, 5-6 hold still, 7-8 come down.
- Rehearse a familiar stunt (5 minutes): repeat it four times in a row on the beat without missing a count.
- Two stunts in 16 counts (5 minutes): the group picks a second stunt and links it to the first with no pause.
- Three stunts in 24 counts (5 minutes): add a third stunt plus 8 counts of traveling to change spots on the mat.
- Rotate roles in the new stunt so each member is the base at least once.
- Three-minute showcase: half the groups perform and the other half checks the timing; then switch.
Rules
- The beat never justifies a rushed climb: if there is no time, pick a lower stunt.
- On counts 7-8 the flyer always comes down forward and under control.
- Use only stunts practiced in earlier lessons.
- Groups count quietly to stay in sync.
Variations
Easier
Use slower music and build a single stunt in 8 counts.
Standard
Link three stunts on the beat with traveling between them.
Harder
Build stunts in 4 counts instead of 8 and add a change of facing between them.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: keep the beat with claps or an instrument and be a seated base in one stunt.
- Hearing impairment: use a light or a teacher gesture for each count.
- Lower fitness: choose low stunts and stretch the build to 16 counts.
Learning goals
- Match stunt builds and dismounts to a musical structure.
- Synchronize group actions with the beat.
- Create a short sequence of linked stunts.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 9
- music: 1
Teacher tip
Pick instrumental music or songs with few lyrics so counting is easy to hear. Groups tend to rush the dismount: insist that counts 5-6 are completely still.
