Build-a-Body Puzzle
A giant cardstock doll has fallen apart and its pieces are hidden around the gym. Each child finds one, moves that part on their own body, and together the class rebuilds the doll on the floor. Kids learn how the whole body fits together while working as a team.
How to play
- Beforehand, cut a big doll into about 20 pieces (head, neck, trunk, upper arms, forearms, hands, thighs, lower legs, feet, ears) and hide them in plain sight around the gym.
- In a circle, the teacher says: "Our doll Pete fell down and came apart! Can we help him?" (1 min).
- Music on: everyone searches, one piece per child. Once they find it, they come back to the circle (3 min).
- Taking turns, each child shows their piece and names the part, and everyone moves it: "It's a foot! Let's wiggle our feet" (5 min).
- In the middle, the class rebuilds Pete: trunk first, then whoever has the part that connects next (neck, head, arms…) (5 min).
- Finish: everyone lies down copying Pete's pose and the teacher names parts that kids gently touch (2 min).
Rules
- Each child looks for and carries only one piece.
- Walk while searching, no running or pushing.
- Wait while a friend places their piece.
- If someone can't find a piece, we help them.
Variations
Easier
An 8-piece doll with big parts, and the teacher guides where each goes.
Standard
A 20-piece doll, and kids decide the building order.
Harder
Hide two dolls for two groups to build, or build the doll in a different pose.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: hide pieces at the child's height and help them place theirs from the wheelchair.
- Autism: show a photo of the finished doll beforehand and warn when the music will start.
- Different skill levels: some get big easy pieces; skilled kids get joints like elbow or knee.
Learning goals
- Recognize body parts and how they connect.
- Move the identified part on their own body.
- Work together to finish a shared task.
Equipment for a class of 25
- large cardstock sheets for the doll: 4
- music
Teacher tip
Laminate the pieces to use all year. Give the doll a name and talk to it: a character keeps attention much longer.
