Brilé: Prison Ball with Rescue Catches
A version of brilé, a traditional throwing and dodging game, where anyone tagged goes to prison and can come back if their team catches a ball in the air. Students work on accurate throwing, catching, dodging, and teamwork without long eliminations.
How to play
- Split the court into two 15x10 m halves with cones and mark a 2 m deep prison behind each. Two teams in pinnies with three foam balls (3 minutes).
- Explain the goal: throw the ball to hit an opponent below the shoulders. If it hits without being caught, that player goes to the prison on the other side (2 minutes).
- Prisoners keep playing: anyone who hits an opponent from prison returns to their court (2-minute trial).
- Rescue rule: if a court player catches an opponent's throw in the air and shouts "Brilé!", one teammate from prison returns to the court (6-minute game).
- Switch sides and teammates for a second 6-minute game. The team with the most players on its court at the end wins.
- Three-minute wrap-up: what worked better, throwing hard or throwing quickly at someone who wasn't paying attention?
Rules
- Only hits below the shoulders count; a head hit doesn't count and the thrower loses the ball.
- Don't step on the center line or the prison line to throw.
- Balls that go out are retrieved by the nearest team and put back in play within 5 seconds.
- Anyone in prison for more than two minutes returns automatically.
Variations
Easier
Play with one ball, and catching a bounce also counts as a rescue.
Standard
Three balls, an active prison, and rescues for catches in the air.
Harder
Each team has a secret captain who can only be rescued with two catches in a row.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play from prison with their own ball and return by hitting any opponent, with no time limit.
- Visual impairment: use a beeper ball and give the player a 2 m safe zone where they can't be hit.
- Weaker throwers: a tagged player may throw from closer, in a zone marked in front of the prison.
Learning goals
- Throw accurately at a moving target.
- Catch in the air and dodge in a competitive game.
- Work together to rescue teammates without long eliminations.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 3
- cones: 16
- pinnies: 13
Teacher tip
Use foam balls only and stop play right away after any throw to the head. If the same students always throw, add a rule that no one can throw twice in a row.
