Bridge Scenes: From One Frozen Picture to Another
Each group gets two very different frozen pictures, a starting one and an ending one, and has to invent the moving scene that believably gets from the first to the second. It builds creating transitions, story logic, body control in poses, and cooperation.
How to play
- Prepare cards with picture pairs: "a family eating dinner peacefully" and "everyone standing on their chairs yelling"; "a team celebrating a goal" and "the same team in tears."
- In groups of five, each group draws a card and builds both frozen pictures, paying attention to levels, eye lines, and expression (5 min).
- Quick showing (3 min): groups show both pictures back to back and the audience imagines what happened in between.
- Bridge (7 min): the group creates a 45- to 60-second scene that starts in the first pose and ends exactly in the second.
- Perform (10 min): opening picture, bridge, and final picture, holding each picture 5 seconds; the audience judges whether the change was believable.
Rules
- Pictures stay completely still for at least 5 seconds.
- The bridge must be a logical story, not a magic jump from one picture to the other.
- Safety: in pictures with height, nobody climbs on chairs or classmates; height is shown on tiptoes or with arms.
Variations
Easier
Similar starting and ending pictures that only change emotion, with a 30-second bridge.
Standard
Two very different pictures and a 45- to 60-second bridge.
Harder
Do the bridge without words and add a third picture in the middle that the audience suggests on the spot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student holds a central seated position in both pictures, and the group builds the poses around them.
- Visual impairment: the group guides the student with verbal cues and light touch to get into each picture.
- Skill level: faster groups are asked to replay the bridge in slow motion or in reverse.
Learning goals
- Create a coherent stage transition between two given situations.
- Hold frozen poses with body control and expression.
- Cooperate as a group to solve a creative challenge.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards: 6
Teacher tip
Insist on building the pictures in detail first; when the pictures are strong, the bridge almost writes itself.
