Breakfasts Around the World: Energy Game Stations
A four-station circuit, each with a common breakfast from one country and a traditional game from the same place. Students explore breakfast as a source of energy and learn games from other cultures.
How to play
- Intro: four stations and four real breakfasts. None is «the best»: they all combine some energy, some protein, and fruit or veggies in different ways (3 min).
- Spain: bread with tomato and olive oil, fruit, and milk. Game: el pañuelo (steal the bacon) with two numbered teams (6 min).
- Mexico: tortillas with beans and egg, plus fruit. Game: los encantados (freeze tag); a tagged player stays frozen until a teammate frees them (6 min).
- Japan: rice, miso soup, and fish. Game: Daruma-san ga koronda; the caller turns around and anyone caught moving goes back to the start (6 min).
- USA: oatmeal with fruit or eggs. Game: sharks and minnows; minnows cross the court and tagged players become seaweed who tag without moving their feet (6 min).
- Wrap-up: each group invents a quick breakfast for a day with first-period PE and shares it with the class (3 min).
Rules
- At each station, the group first reads the breakfast card and names what gives energy.
- In steal the bacon, if two arrive together, settle it with rock-paper-scissors, no wrestling.
- Tag gently in the chase games.
- Nobody mocks another culture's food or what anyone eats for breakfast.
Variations
Easier
8-minute stations with only two games, explained by the teacher at each one.
Standard
Four rotating stations.
Harder
Each group must teach its station's game to the next group before rotating.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: calls the numbers and gives the signal in steal the bacon; can be the caller in Daruma-san.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: start signals are visual (raised arm, bandana held up).
- Students new from other countries: invite them, if they want, to share a breakfast or game from home.
Learning goals
- Value breakfast as a source of energy for the day.
- Learn and play traditional games from different cultures.
- Take an active part in cooperative and chase games.
Equipment for a class of 25
- breakfast cards: 4
- bandanas: 2
- pinnies: 8
- cones: 20
Teacher tip
Set the stations in the four corners of the yard and name one student per station to read the card. Many teens skip breakfast for lack of time: let them come up with real two-minute options.
