Brännboll: Swedish Burn Ball
A bat game very popular in schools in Sweden and Finland. The batter tosses the ball to themselves, hits it, and runs around four bases; fielders bring the ball to the burner, who 'burns' anyone caught between bases. Students work on batting, base running, and decision making.
How to play
- Set 4 cone bases in a 15-yard square, a batting area with a hoop, and the burner's hoop next to it. Form two teams of 12-13 (3 min).
- The batting team lines up. Each batter tosses the tennis ball, hits it into the field with the soft bat, and drops the bat in the hoop.
- They run counterclockwise and may stop at any base, even if others are there; runners on base advance on every hit.
- Fielders pass the ball to the burner. When the burner steps in the hoop and shouts 'burned!', anyone between bases goes to the back of the line without scoring.
- A full lap is 1 point, or 3 on a single hit. A catch on the fly gives the fielders 2 points.
- When everyone has batted, switch roles; two turns per team (22 min).
Rules
- Drop the bat in the hoop before running; a thrown bat cancels the hit.
- Fielders stay at least 8 yards from the batting area.
- Each batter gets three tries to hit.
- No passing another runner.
Variations
Easier
A large soft ball, a racket, and bases 12 yards apart.
Standard
Tennis ball, soft bat, and a 15-yard square.
Harder
Before burning, the ball must pass through three different fielders.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student hits off a cone and a teammate runs, or they run a smaller inner square.
- Visual impairment: a large bright ball on a cone and a guide around the bases.
- Skill level: if the self-toss is hard, a teammate tosses from 2 yards.
Learning goals
- Hit with a bat, aiming the ball into open space.
- Decide whether to run or stay on base depending on where the ball is.
- Learn about a traditional bat game from the Nordic countries.
Equipment for a class of 25

- tennis balls: 4
- hoops: 2

Teacher tip
'Bränna' means to burn in Swedish. If every fielder chases the ball, assign zones and ask for quick passes to the burner.
