Boxing Footwork on the Agility Ladder
Students apply boxing footwork (step in, step back, lateral step and pivot) on the agility ladder without dropping their guard. It builds agility, coordination and dynamic balance, finishing with shadow punches after each ladder.
How to play
- Lay out four agility ladders side by side with a cone ten feet past the end; six students per ladder (2 min).
- Set 1 (3 min): step forward in stance, one foot per square, never bringing the feet together; walk back on the outside.
- Set 2 (3 min): sideways in boxing stance, stepping in and out of each square with short steps.
- Set 3 (3 min): two squares forward, one back, like moving in and out of range.
- Set 4 (4 min): at the end of the ladder, pivot on the lead foot at the cone and throw a 1-2-3 in the air.
- Wrap-up (3 min): in pairs, one does set 4 while the partner watches for crossed feet; then switch.
Rules
- Start when the student ahead reaches the middle of the ladder.
- Keep the guard up the entire time.
- If you step on a rung, keep moving instead of stopping suddenly.
- Always return on the outside of the ladder.
Variations
Easier
Do only sets 1 and 2 at walking pace.
Standard
Four sets with gradually increasing speed.
Harder
A partner calls the direction of each step square by square.
Adaptations
- For limited mobility, draw a wider ladder on the floor and travel it in a wheelchair with trunk rotations.
- For students with low vision, mark the squares with high-contrast tape.
- Advanced students add a slip between squares.
Learning goals
- Move in stance with short, balanced steps.
- Use the pivot to change angles.
- Observe and correct a partner's footwork.
Equipment for a class of 25
- agility ladders: 4
- cones: 4
Teacher tip
Stress quality over speed: most students speed up and start hopping instead of gliding. If you have no ladders, draw them with chalk.
