Bounce Volleyball 4v4
A 4v4 volleyball game where the ball may bounce once on the floor between a team's contacts. The bounce rule lengthens rallies, gives students time to get in position, and lets less experienced players succeed.
How to play
- Set up two courts about 23 × 23 ft per side with a low net at 6.5 ft on the blacktop; make six teams of 4 with pinnies, plus a rotating sub if there are extras.
- Explain the rule: on each possession a team may let the ball bounce once on their side, at any moment, with a maximum of three contacts.
- Play with an underhand serve from the end line; students who can't reach may serve from mid-court.
- Play 6-minute games; the team sitting out acts as line judges and keeps score.
- After each game, rotate teams so everyone plays each other and everyone referees at least once; play three rounds.
- Finish with 4 minutes: ask when it was smarter to use the bounce and when it was better to play the ball right away.
Rules
- The ball may bounce only once per possession; a second bounce is a point for the other team.
- No player may touch the ball twice in a row.
- No catching or holding the ball.
- If you move into a teammate's area to play the ball, call for it to avoid collisions.
Variations
Easier
Allow one bounce before every contact and let students catch the serve.
Standard
One bounce per possession and a maximum of three contacts per team.
Harder
The bounce is allowed only on serve receive; the rest of the rally is played in the air.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student may let the ball bounce twice before contact and plays near the net.
- Visual impairment: use a brightly colored ball and have a teammate call out when the ball is coming their way.
- Lower fitness: allow free substitutions with the sub every 2 minutes.
Learning goals
- Use the bounce as a tool to buy time and get in position.
- Work with teammates to build the rally in three contacts.
- Take an active part in the game regardless of skill level.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyball: 3
- net: 2
- cones: 16
- pinnies: 24
Teacher tip
This rule is perfect for the first lessons of the unit because long rallies are highly motivating. Phase out the bounce gradually once most students can control the forearm pass.
