Bouldering Falls and Spotting Technique

A progression for learning to fall safely off the wall and to spot a partner: stance, hand position and how to steer the fall onto the mat. It is the safety foundation of any bouldering unit and builds responsibility for one's partner.

How to play

  1. Lay continuous mats under the wall; take 2 minutes to explain a correct fall: feet first, knees bent, roll back with arms tucked and no hands down.
  2. Practice falls from the floor: in groups of 4, each student steps off a low bench and rolls on the mat, 4 reps (4 minutes).
  3. Repeat from the wall with feet at 30 cm (1 ft) and then 60 cm (2 ft), letting go on a partner's signal (4 minutes).
  4. Teach spotting: feet apart, arms up with thumbs tucked against fingers, hands at the climber's hip level to steer them, not catch them.
  5. In pairs, one climbs a low traverse and lets go without warning at some point; the spotter follows and guides the fall to the middle of the mat (6 minutes, switching roles).
  6. Close with 3 minutes reviewing errors seen, such as reaching back with hands or spreading the thumbs.

Teacher tip

The most dangerous error is landing on the hands; fix it starting with the bench falls. Check for gaps between mats before each drill.
