Bottle Cap Knockout Square
A schoolyard bottle cap game: each player puts caps inside a chalk square and, taking turns, flicks a shooter cap with one finger to knock the others out. Students work on accurate finger flicks, judging angles, and strategy.
How to play
- Groups of 4. Each group chalks a 3 x 3 ft square and a shooting line 3 ft away. Each player puts 2 caps inside and keeps one shooter (2 min).
- Teach the flick: index or middle finger held against the thumb and released sharply against the edge of the shooter (2 min).
- Taking turns, shoot from the line. Every cap knocked out goes to the shooter; if the shooter stays inside the square, the player puts one of their won caps back in (8 min).
- Next shots are taken from where the shooter stopped. When the square is empty, refill it and jog to another group's square (included in the time above).
- Final round in pairs: partners take turns with the shooter and add up what they knock out together (4 min).
- Count the caps won and return them all to the shared box (2 min).
Rules
- Touch the cap only with one finger, never push it with your hand.
- Each player shoots once per turn, even after knocking caps out.
- Safety: remove caps with sharp edges; play kneeling or squatting, never lying in walkways.
Variations
Easier
A smaller square with caps near the edge.
Standard
A 3 x 3 ft square with two caps per player.
Harder
Call your target cap first; if another one goes out, it doesn't count.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays on a table with the square drawn on cardstock.
- Visual impairment: use brightly colored caps and a square outlined with raised tape.
- Students with autism: chalk each player's waiting spot and show the turn order.
Learning goals
- Flick with one finger while controlling force and direction.
- Plan each shot based on where the caps lie.
- Respect the rules and turns of a traditional game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- bottle caps: 80
- chalk: 7
Teacher tip
Ask students to collect bottle caps at home a few weeks ahead and check them. Decorating shooters with colored stickers helps each player spot theirs.
