Bottle-Cap Bike Race: Chalk Courses and Stages
Bottle caps («chapas») is a Spanish street game: you draw a road in chalk on the ground and each player moves their cap with a flick of the finger, like a bike race. It works on fine precision, controlling force and creativity in designing the course.
How to play
- Explain the origin: it was played with bottle caps, often decorated, on sidewalks and playgrounds. Groups of four, one cap each (3 min).
- Each group draws a chalk course about 10 meters long, two lanes wide, with curves, a straightaway and a mountain pass (narrow section) (8 min).
- Stage 1: take turns, one flick each. If the cap leaves the road, it goes back to where it was (7 min).
- Stage 2: groups rotate to the next course and race on a track they don't know (7 min).
- Overall standings by points, and a show of hands for the best-designed course (5 min).
Rules
- One flick per turn, using the index or middle finger snapped off the thumb.
- If one cap hits another, both stay where they stop.
- Play kneeling or squatting, never lying down in walkways.
- Chalk goes back in its container, and courses are scuffed out at the end if the school asks.
Variations
Easier
Wide road and one do-over per stage.
Standard
Road two hand-widths wide, and you go back if you leave it.
Harder
Narrow road with a one-hand-wide mountain pass; leave the road in the pass and you restart the pass.
Adaptations
- Fine-motor difficulties: tap with a pencil or push with the palm.
- Limited mobility: draw the course on butcher paper on a table or at wheelchair height.
- Visual impairment: mark the road edge with raised masking tape while a partner calls out the position.
Learning goals
- Control force in precision shots.
- Design a game course using shared criteria.
- Revive a traditional Spanish street game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- bottle caps: 30
- chalk: 10
Teacher tip
If you don't have metal caps, plastic bottle caps work and won't cut anyone. Hand out chalk already broken into pieces so they don't waste time on details.
