Both-Hands Beanbag Target Toss
An accuracy toss at hoop targets where every student throws with both the dominant and non-dominant hand, and non-dominant points count double. It builds accuracy with both hands, opposite-foot coordination and awareness of one's own dominance.
How to play
- Set up 6 targets of 3 hoops (center 3 points, middle 2, outer 1) and cone lines at 10, 13 and 16 feet. Groups of 4 per target, one beanbag each (3 min).
- Technique: underhand toss with the foot opposite the throwing hand forward. Free practice: 3 tosses with each hand from 10 feet (3 min).
- Scoring round: 2 beanbags with the dominant hand and 2 with the non-dominant hand, which score double. Everything adds to the group total (5 min).
- When everyone has thrown, collect on the signal and record; if the group beats its score, it moves back a line.
- Repeat the round with an overhand throw, using both hands (4 min).
- Each student shares which hand scored more and what they changed to improve with the other (3 min).
Rules
- Collect only when the whole group has thrown and the signal is given.
- Throw from behind the line and only at your own target.
- The front foot is always opposite the throwing hand.
Variations
Easier
Toss from 6 feet at one large hoop, no scoring in round one.
Standard
Three hoops, three lines and double points with the non-dominant hand.
Harder
Before each non-dominant toss, call the target hoop; it only scores if you land in that one.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: students using wheelchairs throw from the 10-foot line or closer, same scoring.
- Low vision: a contrasting center hoop and a partner clapping behind it as a sound cue.
- Skill level: accurate throwers use the 16-foot line; students who struggle step closer.
Learning goals
- Throw accurately with the dominant and non-dominant hand.
- Step with the opposite foot when throwing.
- Identify their dominant hand and value progress with the other.
Equipment for a class of 25
- beanbags: 24
- hoops: 18
- cones: 18
Teacher tip
With the non-dominant hand almost everyone steps with the same-side foot: remind them it's the opposite one. Face all targets the same way with 10 feet between groups.
