Body Rulers: Hands, Feet and Steps
In pairs, students rotate through stations where they measure objects using body parts: a bench in hand spans, a rope in foot lengths, the court in steps and a hoop in arm spans. Comparing results, they discover the size of their body segments and that every body measures differently.
How to play
- Set up four stations: a gym bench, a long rope stretched out, a 50-foot line on the court and a large hoop leaning against the wall. Give each pair a notebook (2 min).
- Explain the units: hand span, from thumb tip to pinky tip; foot length, heel to toe; step, normal walking; arm span, arms stretched wide (3 min).
- Each pair starts at a station and measures the object with the assigned unit. Both partners measure and write their result as a number or tally marks (3 min per station, 12 min total).
- Rotate on the whistle, always clockwise and walking (included in station time).
- Group share: the teacher asks how many hand spans long the bench is and students see that everyone got a different number. Discuss why that happens (3 min).
Rules
- Measure without standing on the bench or pulling the rope tight.
- On the step line, walk, don't run.
- Each pair waits for the station to be free before starting.
- Both partners measure and record their own result.
Variations
Easier
Use only feet and steps, with the teacher helping count.
Standard
Measure with hand spans, feet, steps and arm spans at four stations.
Harder
Add giant steps and baby steps on the same distance and compare results.
Adaptations
- For a student in a wheelchair, replace steps with wheel turns or forearm lengths, and place objects at a reachable height.
- For students with visual impairments, measure by tracing the object with the hands while a partner helps count out loud.
- For students who need more challenge, estimate the result first and then check how close they got.
Learning goals
- Use body parts as units of measurement.
- Compare the size of their body segments with classmates'.
- Estimate distances and lengths around them in a hands-on way.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
This ties in nicely with math class; kids often leave gaps between hand spans or feet, so show them how to line up the thumb where the last pinky ended.
