Body Percussion Battle: Call and Response
Two teams face off in lines, create 8-count rhythm phrases using claps, chest, thighs, and feet, and trade them back and forth like a musical battle. It builds a shared beat, rhythmic memory, group coordination, and creating together.
How to play
- Warm-up (3 min) in a circle: everyone keeps the beat with their feet and echoes 4-count phrases. Introduce the four sounds: clap, chest pat, thigh slap, stomp.
- In four teams of six, each team creates two 8-count phrases ending in a freeze, a call and a response, and practices them (5 min).
- Battle (6 min): two teams line up facing each other 12 feet apart. A plays its call; B echoes it exactly and answers with its response. Then B starts. Switch opponents after 3 minutes.
- Each exact, on-time echo scores a point, and the most original response scores another, chosen by the watching team.
- Finale (3 min): all four teams chain their phrases nonstop, keeping the beat one student marks with their feet.
Rules
- Phrases are always 8 counts and start on the beat.
- Respect the other team's turn: while they perform, your team listens quietly.
- Safety: chest and thigh pats are open-handed and light, and stomps use the whole foot.
Variations
Easier
4-count phrases with only two sounds, claps and thigh slaps.
Standard
8-count phrases with four sounds and a team battle.
Harder
Include a rest, a level change, and a traveling move in every phrase, and speed up the beat each round.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays seated, replacing stomps with pats on the chair or thighs.
- Hearing impairment: the beat is also shown with a visible arm motion, and the student faces whoever is keeping it.
- Autism or noise sensitivity: the student can wear earplugs or ear protection and choose soft sounds like snaps or brushes.
Learning goals
- Keep a shared beat as a group using body percussion.
- Memorize and play back 8-count rhythm phrases.
- Create original rhythm phrases cooperatively.
Teacher tip
Always count "five, six, seven, eight" before each phrase so everyone comes in together; without the count-in, the battle falls apart.
