Body Percussion: 4-Count Patterns
Students learn four basic body sounds and combine them into increasingly complex 4-count patterns, then create their own as a group. Students work on rhythm, coordinating different body parts, and motor memory.
How to play
- Have students stand in a circle. Spend 3 minutes introducing the four sounds: stomp (S), thigh pat (P), clap (C), and snap or chest tap (T).
- Rhythm echo (4 minutes): the teacher performs a 4-count pattern, for example S-P-C-P, and the class repeats it; speed up gradually.
- Chain (4 minutes): each person in the circle invents a 4-count pattern, and the person to the right repeats it and adds their own; restart every 6 people.
- In groups of 5, each group creates a 16-count phrase (four patterns) and rehearses it until it is error-free (6 minutes).
- Each group performs its phrase; if the audience can repeat it after seeing it twice, the group earns a clarity point (3 minutes).
- Wrap-up: the whole class performs the phrase of the group with the most points.
Rules
- Stomps and chest taps are done without hitting hard, to avoid discomfort.
- Keep the beat even if someone makes a mistake; the group doesn't stop.
- Listen quietly to the pattern before repeating it.
- Every group member contributes at least one pattern.
Variations
Easier
Patterns with only stomps and claps at a slow tempo.
Standard
All four sounds combined in 16-count phrases.
Harder
Add rests and off-beats, or perform the phrase while walking in a circle.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: replace stomps with taps on the chair or desk.
- Hearing impairment: use very visible sounds and have the teacher show the beat with a raised hand.
- Advanced students: do two patterns at once, with different hands and feet.
Learning goals
- Keep a steady beat while making body sounds.
- Memorize and repeat 16-count rhythm sequences.
- Create an original rhythm phrase as a group.
Teacher tip
Always count "1, 2, 3, 4" out loud before starting. If the group falls apart, slow down instead of stopping.
