Blindfolded Puzzle Builders
In teams of five, two blindfolded builders gather giant puzzle pieces spread across the gym and assemble them following only the voice directions of teammates who cannot cross a line. Students practice precise communication and cooperation.
How to play
- Form 5 teams of 5. Each team's 12 puzzle pieces lie face up in a zone 10 m (33 ft) from its base, marked with cones.
- Two builders wear blindfolds; three guides stay behind the base line and may only talk.
- On the whistle, guides give clear directions: "three steps forward," "turn to your right," "squat down, it's at your feet." Builders carry one piece at a time.
- At the base, builders fit the pieces together on the floor following the guides. Every 3 minutes two roles rotate, three times in all.
- The first team to finish wins, and the teacher also awards the best instruction heard. If time allows, teams swap puzzles.
Rules
- Builders walk with one hand out front.
- Guides never cross the line or touch.
- One piece at a time, never another team's.
- No shouting, so other teams are not confused.
Variations
Easier
A 6-piece puzzle, and one guide may walk alongside without touching.
Standard
A 12-piece puzzle, two builders, and three guides.
Harder
Guides may only use clock positions: "at your three," "at your nine."
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student who uses a wheelchair can be the lead guide or a builder with pieces placed on benches.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: an escort guide relays directions with agreed shoulder taps.
- Shyness: students who are not comfortable guiding aloud co-guide with a partner.
Learning goals
- Give precise directions about position and direction.
- Orient themselves using someone else's directions.
- Cooperate by sharing roles toward a common goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- giant puzzle pieces: 60
- blindfolds: 10
- cones: 10
Teacher tip
No giant puzzles? Cut a large poster board with a picture into 12 pieces. Keep team zones as far apart as possible so voices do not overlap.
