Blindfolded Knots with a Partner Guide
In pairs, one student wears a blindfold and ties a knot using only spoken instructions from a partner who may not touch the rope. Students reinforce basic knots, precise communication and trust, just as you might need to at night or in the cold outdoors.
How to play
- Spend 3 minutes reviewing three knots students already know: figure eight, bowline and clove hitch. Each pair gets two ropes and a blindfold.
- One partner puts on the blindfold and holds a rope; the guide picks a knot without naming it and explains it with words only: "Take the end in your right hand, make a loop toward you."
- The guide may not touch the rope or the partner's hands. They have 2 minutes per knot.
- When finished, the tier removes the blindfold, guesses which knot it was and both check whether it is correct. Then they switch roles.
- Play 3 rounds per person (about 9 minutes). Each correct knot earns the pair a point.
- Wrap up with a quick class question: which words or instructions worked best?
Rules
- The guide uses voice only; touching the rope cancels the point.
- The blindfolded partner stays seated for the whole round.
- Ropes never go around anyone's neck or wrists.
- Keep voices low so you do not distract other pairs.
Variations
Easier
Allow peeking for the first 20 seconds or use only the figure eight.
Standard
Tie all three knots fully blindfolded with spoken instructions.
Harder
The guide stands back to back and cannot see the partner's hands, so they must ask questions to check progress.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the activity is seated and needs no changes; adjust table height if needed.
- Autism or discomfort with blindfolds: let the student close their eyes or tie the knot with the rope inside a cloth bag.
- Hearing impairment: the guide uses gestures or, with prior permission, taps the partner's hand.
Learning goals
- Tie basic knots without looking.
- Give clear, step-by-step spoken instructions.
- Trust a partner and handle frustration when mistakes happen.
Equipment for a class of 25
- ropes: 25
- blindfolds: 13
Teacher tip
Circulate and listen to the instructions; many pairs struggle because they say "here" or "that one." Sanitize the blindfolds or have each student keep the same one.
