Blindfolded Guide Rope Course
In groups of five, three students hold a long rope to form a winding path while a blindfolded classmate follows it by sliding a hand along the rope and completing challenges marked by knots. Students build orientation, balance, and care for one another.
How to play
- Form 5 groups of 5, each with a long rope tied with three knots. Roles: three posts, one blindfolded walker, and one guardian angel (3 minutes).
- Posts hold the rope at waist height to form a path about 10 m (33 ft) long with two curves. A hoop lies on the floor at the first knot and a mat at the second.
- The walker moves with one hand on the rope: at the first knot, step into and out of the hoop by feel; at the second, crawl across the mat. At the third, guess how many curves you followed.
- The angel walks alongside without touching and only says "stop" if there is danger. Each turn takes about 3 minutes.
- Before the next turn, posts reshape the path. Rotate until everyone has been the walker.
Rules
- Never jerk or move the rope while someone is walking.
- The walker goes slowly and may stop at any time.
- Only the angel may speak.
- Never wrap the rope around a hand or neck.
Variations
Easier
A straight path with no challenges, using closed eyes instead of a blindfold.
Standard
A path with two curves and two challenges.
Harder
Posts raise or lower the rope during the walk.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student who uses a wheelchair follows the rope with one hand while the angel pushes; challenges become touching a cone or picking up a beanbag.
- Visual impairment: offer the angel or path-designer role and invite them to share how they orient themselves.
- Skill level: confident walkers memorize the order of challenges before starting.
Learning goals
- Orient themselves using touch cues.
- Keep their balance without vision.
- Take on different helping roles in the group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long rope: 5
- blindfolds: 5
- hoops: 5
- mats: 5
Teacher tip
Thick ropes are easier to follow by hand. If you have wall bars or posts, tie off one end and free up a student as a second angel.
