Blindfolded Bouldering Traverse Guided by Voice
In pairs, one climber traverses the bouldering wall blindfolded while the partner guides them only by voice, calling out holds and footholds. It builds precise communication, trust and body awareness through the hands and feet.
How to play
- Lay mats along the entire base of the wall and tape off a low 6–8 m (20–25 ft) traverse where feet never go higher than 50 cm (20 in).
- Pair students up and give them 3 minutes to agree on a code: clock directions (hold at 3 o'clock), distance in hand spans, and key words like "stop" or "step down".
- First turn: the climber does the traverse eyes open while the guide practices the calls (2 minutes).
- Second turn: the climber puts on the blindfold and traverses guided only by voice; the guide walks alongside without touching except to protect (about 4 minutes).
- Switch roles and repeat; each pair records how many times the climber had to step down.
- If time allows, run a round where the guide may use only 10 words, then close with 3 minutes on which calls worked best.
Rules
- Feet never go above 50 cm and climbing happens only over mats.
- The climber can say "stop" and remove the blindfold at any time.
- Only one pair per section of wall, with at least 2 m (6 ft) to the next pair.
Variations
Easier
The climber closes their eyes for only half the traverse and may open them when needed.
Standard
Full 6–8 m traverse blindfolded with voice-only guidance.
Harder
The guide calls from 3 m (10 ft) away and may not repeat any instruction.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: participate as the guide, or traverse on large holds with a bench along the wall for support.
- Anxiety or autism: allow the traverse with no blindfold or with dark glasses, or start as the guide until comfortable.
- Lower strength: choose a traverse with jugs and marked rest spots every 2 m.
Learning goals
- Give a partner clear, short and useful verbal cues.
- Develop tactile awareness of holds and footholds without vision.
- Build trust and shared responsibility in a climbing activity.
Equipment for a class of 25
- bouldering wall: 1
- mats: 8
- blindfolds: 13
Teacher tip
Remind guides to call the feet first: most only call hands and the climber pumps out. Check for loose holds before class starts.
