Blind Traverse: Your Partner's Voice Guides You
A horizontal traverse on the lowest rungs while blindfolded, guided only by a partner's voice. It builds trust and precise communication and introduces adaptive climbing, where a guide gives spoken directions.
How to play
- Rules and voice code: "right," "left," "up," "down," "hand," "foot" and "stop" (4 min).
- Eyes-open round: the partner guides with the code to practice it (5 min).
- Blindfold round: the guide stands one meter to the side and directs move by move (6 min).
- Switch roles (6 min).
- Reflection: which instructions helped most, and what it's like for blind climbers who climb with a guide (4 min).
Rules
- Blindfolded, feet stay on the two lowest rungs and the traverse is horizontal only.
- On "stop," freeze with all four limbs in place.
- Anyone can take off the blindfold at any time.
- The guide doesn't touch unless asked or there's a risk.
Variations
Easier
Squinted eyes instead of a blindfold and a two-section traverse.
Standard
Blindfold and a three- or four-section traverse.
Harder
The guide can only use rung numbers and sides, no "up" or "down."
Adaptations
- Blind or low-vision students: act as expert guides for the group, or climb with a partner guiding, on equal terms.
- Deaf students: a tap code on shoulder and ankle instead of voice, agreed beforehand.
- Anxious students: may do the round with eyes closed and no blindfold, opening them whenever they want.
Learning goals
- Give clear, precise instructions.
- Trust a partner and move with control without sight.
- Value adaptive climbing and diversity.
Equipment for a class of 25
- wall bars: 8
- mats: 12
- blindfolds: 15
Teacher tip
If you don't have blindfolds, clean bandanas or neck gaiters work. Common mistake: guides all talking at once; each pair on its own section with an empty section between pairs.
