Blind Guardian: Sneak Up Without a Sound
In three circles at once, a blindfolded student guards a treasure while the others try to take it by sneaking up in total silence. It builds stealth, body control, and honesty in play.
How to play
- Three cone circles with a radius of about 8 m; in each, a seated guardian wearing a blindfold with a bandana behind them (3 min).
- Sneak-up rounds: three or four go at once; if the guardian points at someone they hear, that player returns to the edge and starts again (8 min).
- Variation: besides grabbing the treasure, you must bring it back to the edge without being pointed at; new guardian each round (5 min).
- Debrief: what worked (fox walk, using background noise, going slow) and what gave people away (4 min).
Rules
- The guardian points with a still arm, no sweeping side to side.
- If the guardian says 'freeze!', everyone stops.
- Move at a walk, never running or crawling.
- Anyone can take off the blindfold at any time.
Variations
Easier
Bigger circle, and the guardian can point only three times per round.
Standard
Unlimited points and a one-way grab.
Harder
Grab and return, on ground covered in dry leaves.
Adaptations
- Blind students: they make excellent guardians; as sneakers, they go with a partner guiding at the elbow.
- Students uncomfortable with blindfolds: guard with eyes closed and back turned.
- Limited mobility: be the guardian or approach on crutches or in a wheelchair, finding the quietest way.
Learning goals
- Move while controlling noise and balance.
- Play honestly when no one is checking.
- Use stealth techniques that help when watching wildlife.
Equipment for a class of 25
- blindfolds: 3
- bandanas: 3
- cones: 24
Teacher tip
Play on grass or dirt, not gravel. Common mistake: guardians pointing at random just in case; cap the points in the easier version.
