Blind Copy Cup Tower
In groups of three, a blindfolded explorer walks to a cup tower built in secret, studies it with their hands only, and returns to base to build an exact copy without looking. Students develop tactile perception, memory, and fine motor control.
How to play
- Make groups of three with 12 stacking cups and two cones 8 m (26 ft) apart: cone A holds the model tower and cone B the copy.
- The architect secretly builds a 6-cup tower at cone A with an original design: upside down, on their side, in a pyramid, or in a row.
- The guide walks the blindfolded explorer from cone B to cone A with a hand on their shoulder. There, the explorer has 30 seconds to touch the tower without knocking it over.
- Back at cone B, the explorer builds the copy without looking within 1 minute. Then they remove the blindfold and compare: one point per cup in the right spot.
- Roles rotate; each turn takes about 2.5 minutes. After two rotations, towers may use 8 cups.
Rules
- Explorers always walk slowly with their guide.
- If the model falls, the architect rebuilds it and the explorer loses 10 seconds.
- The guide does not describe the tower, only directs the route.
- Cups are never thrown.
Variations
Easier
A 3- or 4-cup tower with closed eyes instead of a blindfold.
Standard
A 6-cup tower, 30 seconds to explore, and 1 minute to build.
Harder
An 8-cup tower explored only once, for 20 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: place cones 3 m (10 ft) apart and build on a table at the height of the student who uses a wheelchair.
- Visual impairment: the student plays without a blindfold on equal terms and can share how they explore by touch.
- Skill level: students who find it easy build with the non-dominant hand.
Learning goals
- Recognize shapes and positions by touch.
- Memorize a structure and reproduce it precisely.
- Guide a classmate without sight safely.
Equipment for a class of 25
- stacking cups: 96
- blindfolds: 8
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
Light cups tip easily, so teach students to explore slowly with their fingertips. Set groups in parallel lanes so guides do not cross.
