Birthday Month Long Rope
The group chants the months of the year while a long rope turns, and each student runs in to jump when their birthday month is called, staying in until the round ends. Students build listening skills, timing their entry, and sharing the space inside the rope.
How to play
- Make groups of 8 to 10 with a long rope and two turners; ask each student for their birthday month (2 min).
- Entry practice: with the rope turning slowly, each student runs in, jumps 3 times, and runs out the other side (4 min).
- Game: everyone chants "January, February, March..." one month per jump; when your month is called, run in and keep jumping until December (4 min).
- Second round in reverse: everyone starts inside and runs out when their month is called; with big groups, a maximum of three jump at once (3 min).
- Rotate turners every two rounds so everyone gets to jump (included in the times above).
- Wrap-up: give a round of applause to this month's birthdays and let them do a solo entry (3 min).
Rules
- Only students who hear their month run in; if you miss it, wait for the next round.
- No more than three students inside the rope at once, spread apart.
- Turners go slowly and stop if someone trips.
- Wait in line outside, 6 feet from the rope.
Variations
Easier
Have the student start inside with the rope still, then jump on their month with the rope swinging.
Standard
Run in on your month with the rope turning and jump until December.
Harder
Chant the days of the week or the seasons, and switch from two-foot jumps to one-foot hops on each name.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student chants the months out loud and signals each classmate's entry.
- Hearing impairment: the teacher holds up cards with the month's name or number.
- Shyness: students who don't want to go in alone can hold hands with a classmate born in the same season.
Learning goals
- Enter a turning long rope at the right moment.
- React to a verbal cue within a sequence.
- Share jumping space with classmates.

Teacher tip
If a lot of students share one month, group them by season so the rope doesn't get crowded. Standing next to the entry point lets you give the "Now!" nudge.
