Bike Rock Dodge and Quick Turn
Students practice two emergency moves for city cycling: dodging an object on the road with a quick handlebar flick without leaving their line, and making a sharp controlled turn to avoid a vehicle cutting across. They build bike handling and reactions to the unexpected.
How to play
- Mark 4 straight 20-yard lines with cones and place three flat disc cones on each as "rocks"; form groups that share a bike and helmet.
- Rock dodge (6 min): riding the line at an easy pace, at the disc flick the handlebars briefly to one side and straighten right away, so the front wheel misses it and the bike stays on line.
- Quick turn (6 min): 10 yards from a cone, steer briefly the opposite way to lean the bike, then turn firmly toward the cone side.
- In pairs, the partner watches and scores 1 to 3 on how little the bike leaves the line on the dodge or how tight the turn is.
- Final course (8 min): a line with rocks, and at the end a partner raises a cone left or right and the rider quick-turns that way.
- Groups rotate so everyone gets at least four passes per move.
Rules
- Helmets buckled and one bike per line.
- Learn every move slowly and speed up only after three clean tries.
- Waiting riders stay behind the start line, never beside the path.
- If you hit a disc, keep riding straight and try again on the next pass.
Variations
Easier
Practice only the rock dodge with widely spaced discs at walking speed.
Standard
Practice the dodge and quick turn separately, then on a combined course.
Harder
Dodge a disc that a partner places at the last moment from a safe side position.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: use an adapted bike or trike, or serve as observer with the score sheet.
- Hearing impairment: give every signal by raising colored cones.
- Inexperienced riders: replace the dodge with a wide cone slalom.
Learning goals
- Dodge an object on the road while holding your line.
- Make a quick, controlled turn in an emergency.
- React safely to unexpected signals while riding.
Equipment for a class of 25
- bikes: 8
- helmets: 8
- cones: 16
- flat disc cones: 12
Teacher tip
Demonstrate both moves very slowly yourself: the quick turn's initial countersteer is subtle and hard to grasp from words alone. Check brakes and tire pressure first.
