Bike and Helmet Fit Check Before You Ride
In pairs, students fit their helmet, set saddle height and brake lever reach, then test the setup on a short course with a checklist. They learn injury prevention, how to prep a bike on their own and good riding posture.
How to play
- Form pairs with one bike and one helmet each and hand out the checklist (2 min).
- Helmet (4 min), using the 2-V-1 rule: two fingers above the eyebrows, straps forming a V under the ears and one finger of room under the chin strap.
- Saddle (4 min): with the heel on the pedal at the bottom, the leg should be almost straight; the partner measures and records the height.
- Levers and tires (3 min): brake levers are reachable without stretching the fingers, tires don't give when squeezed and the chain turns quietly.
- Test ride (5 min): each rider takes two easy laps around a cone course while the partner checks that knees track straight and the back stays relaxed.
- At the end, fix anything needed and mark the seat post with tape to remember the height.
Rules
- No one rides without a helmet fitted and checked by their partner.
- Tighten parts only with the right tool and under teacher supervision.
- Never raise the saddle above the minimum insertion mark on the seat post.
- During the test ride, ride one direction only at walking speed.
Variations
Easier
Fit only the helmet and saddle height with teacher help.
Standard
Fit helmet, saddle and levers, do a quick check and take a test ride.
Harder
Each pair also calculates saddle height as inseam times 0.88 and compares it with the heel method.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student fits the helmet and checks the partner's bike, or fits an adapted bike.
- Visual impairment: helmet and tire checks are done by touch with the partner's guidance.
- Inexperienced riders: walk the bike through the course and ride just one lap.
Learning goals
- Fit a helmet and bike correctly to your own body.
- Check a bike's basic condition independently before riding.
- Connect good riding posture with preventing aches and injuries.

Teacher tip
Keep Allen wrenches and a pump handy. The most common mistake is a helmet tipped back with the forehead exposed, so check every pair yourself before the test ride.
