Bend, Don't Break: Partner Balance Nudges
In pairs, one student is a reed holding a balance and the other is the wind, giving gentle palm nudges to the shoulders, upper back or hips from different directions; the reed must recover without moving the feet. The activity builds reactive balance and controlled pushing.
How to play
- Pair students of similar size and explain the roles: the wind pushes only with an open palm, slowly, on the shoulders, upper back or side of the hip (2 min).
- Strong reed: with feet hip-width apart and knees slightly bent, the reed takes 6 gentle nudges from the front, back and sides and returns to center without moving the feet; then partners switch roles (3 min).
- Narrow reed: same task with feet together, then in a heel-to-toe stance (3 min).
- Stork reed: on one foot, the wind gives very light nudges; if the reed puts the other foot down, they simply start again (3 min).
- Surprise wind: the reed looks straight ahead while the wind varies the direction and timing of each nudge, always just as gently; the reed counts how many nudges they recover from (2 min).
- Class discussion: which stance holds up best, and what does the body do to stay up, such as bending the knees or moving the arms (1 min).
Rules
- Push only with an open palm and slowly, never with a hit and never on the head or neck.
- The wind always stays within reach to steady the reed if they lose balance.
- The reed can say "stop" at any time, and the wind stops right away.
- Keep 2 m (6 ft) between pairs.
Variations
Easier
Always keep feet apart and nudge only from the front and back.
Standard
Take gentle nudges in a wide stance, a narrow stance and on one foot.
Harder
Take nudges on one foot with eyes closed or arms crossed.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: be the reed seated in a wheelchair with the brakes on, recovering trunk posture after shoulder nudges.
- Autism or discomfort with touch: start as the wind with a trusted partner, and the teacher checks in before each round.
- Advanced students: the reed holds an airplane balance, trunk forward and one leg back, while taking nudges.
Learning goals
- Regain balance after small unexpected pushes.
- Control force when pushing a partner safely.
- Respect stop signals and a partner's limits.
Teacher tip
Model the right amount of force with a volunteer: it's less a push and more a hand placed and pressed slowly. Step in right away if anyone shoves.
