BEEF Shot Diagnosis with Slow-Motion Video
In pairs, students film shots in slow motion from two angles and score them with a BEEF rubric to find each shooter's main flaw. Then they practice a corrective drill and film again to check for improvement.
How to play
- Present the BEEF rubric on the worksheet with 0, 1 or 2 points per element and show a model video filmed from the front and the side (4 min).
- In pairs, place the phone or tablet at two spots marked with cones: in front of the shooter and to the side of the shooting hand, 4 m (13 ft) away (3 min).
- Each student takes five shots from 4 m, filmed in slow motion by their partner; then switch (8 min).
- Review the videos, score the rubric and pick the lowest-scoring element; the teacher has a corrective for each letter, such as shooting with your back against a wall for the elbow (5 min).
- Practice the corrective and film five more shots to compare before-and-after scores (5 min).
Rules
- Only film with your partner's permission, and delete videos at the end of class.
- Devices are placed out of the rebound path, on the floor or on a bench.
- Feedback uses the rubric: describe the movement, not the person.
- Each pair records the starting and final scores on the worksheet.
Variations
Easier
Score only one element per round, starting with the elbow.
Standard
Full BEEF rubric with two angles, a corrective and a second recording.
Harder
Add measuring the ball's release angle with a video analysis app.
Adaptations
- Students who do not want to be filmed: a classmate watches live using the same rubric.
- Hearing impairment: rubric with pictures and written feedback or agreed gestures.
- Wheelchair user: the rubric is adapted to seated shooting, scoring a stable trunk instead of the feet.
Learning goals
- Analyze your own shooting mechanics with observable criteria.
- Give and receive respectful technical feedback based on a rubric.
- Use data to check the effect of a corrective drill.

Teacher tip
Check your school's policy on devices and filming before the lesson. Have the four correctives ready in advance so you are not improvising in front of the group.
