Beating Pressure with a Directional First Touch 1v1+1
A player receives a pass with a defender on their back and must take the first touch away from that defender to reach one of two gates. It progresses from passive to live defense so the directional first touch becomes a tactical weapon, not just a skill.
How to play
- In groups of three, mark a 10 x 10 m square with two 2-meter gates on the side opposite the passer (2 min).
- Level 1: the defender starts behind the receiver and may only block one side; the receiver turns the other way and goes through a gate (4 min).
- Level 2: the defender can go for the ball as soon as the passer strikes it (5 min).
- Level 3: add the option of a one-touch return to the passer if the defender is tight, and going through the gate opposite the first touch counts double (6 min).
- Rotate roles every four attempts and discuss which cues helped them decide (3 min).
Rules
- The defender never tackles from behind or with studs up: only side-on challenges.
- Each attempt ends when a gate is crossed, the ball is lost or after 6 seconds.
- Squares are set 5 m apart.
- Players switch their controlling foot on every odd attempt.
Variations
Easier
The defender only shadows without trying to win the ball.
Standard
Progression from passive to live defense with a return-pass option.
Harder
The pass arrives in the air and the defender may press as soon as it is played.
Adaptations
- Partial visual impairment: gates with tall colored cones and the passer calls out which side the defender is on.
- Overweight: 8 x 8 m square to shorten the runs and rest after each attempt.
- Autism: explain the sequence of levels with a drawing and keep the same group.
Learning goals
- Direct the first touch based on where the defender is.
- Decide between going forward and playing the safe return pass.
- Shield the ball with the body in a duel without dangerous contact.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 40
- balls: 10
- pinnies: 10
Teacher tip
The key is that the receiver looks at the defender before the ball arrives; if not, stop and ask where the opponent was.
