Beat the Trap 1-on-2 Dribble
A dribbling-under-pressure drill where a ball handler must beat two defenders inside a square and dribble across a safety line. Students work on protecting the ball, changing hands and pace, and reading the gaps when they are double-teamed.
How to play
- Use cones to mark 9-by-9-yard squares with a start line and a safety line on the opposite side; form groups of three with one ball and two pinnies (2 min).
- Review the keys: keep the dribble low and away from defenders, body between the ball and the defense, head up, and never pick up the dribble in a corner.
- The ball handler starts on their line; the two defenders wait in the middle and may only move once the dribbler passes the first cone.
- The ball handler has 8 seconds to dribble across the safety line; the defenders try to steal it, push the dribbler out of the square, or force them to stop dribbling.
- Rotate the ball handler every two reps and play six full rounds (11 min).
- Stop midway to demonstrate the retreat dribble, two dribbles back to split the trap before attacking the gap (1 min).
Rules
- Defenders may not hold or slap the arm; they may only touch the ball.
- If the ball handler picks up the dribble, the rep is over.
- Safety: nobody dives on the floor for the ball.
- Each group tracks how many times the ball handler gets across.
Variations
Easier
One defender guards with hands behind the back and the ball handler gets 10 seconds.
Standard
The ball handler beats two live defenders in 8 seconds inside the square.
Harder
The ball handler must cross using the weak hand and gets only 6 seconds.
Adaptations
- A student with limited mobility dribbles in a narrower square against one defender who may only touch, not steal.
- Shy students may choose groups with trusted classmates for the first rounds.
- Group students by dribbling level so the pressure is reasonable.
Learning goals
- Protect the ball against two defenders.
- Use the retreat dribble and changes of pace to escape the trap.
- Decide quickly which gap to attack.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 9
- cones: 36
- pinnies: 18
Teacher tip
Defenders tend to reach for the ball, so teach them to cut off the path with their feet first. If a ball handler always loses, enlarge the square or give a one-second head start.
