Beat the Ball: Home Run vs. Fielding Relay

The batter hits and runs all four bases while the fielding team gets the ball and passes it through every player before bringing it home. Each base reached before the relay finishes scores a point, so students work on hitting, quick passing, and teamwork.

How to play

  1. Set up a diamond with 4 bases 15 m apart and a foul area marked with cones. Two teams of 12 (3 minutes).
  2. The batter hits off a cone or an easy pitch from the teacher and runs the bases in order (1 minute to explain).
  3. The fielding team fields the ball, lines up where it was picked up, and passes it hand to hand over their heads; the last player runs it home and shouts "Stop!" (3-minute trial).
  4. At that moment, count the bases the batter has passed: each is one point and a full home run is worth five (6-minute game).
  5. When the whole team has batted, switch sides. Each team tries a new fielding relay: tunnel, zigzag, or circle (6 minutes).
  6. Three-minute wrap-up: which relay was fastest and why?

Rules

Variations

Easier

Only the five fielders closest to the ball do the relay.

Standard

The whole fielding team passes the ball over their heads.

Harder

The batter hits with the weaker hand, and the relay uses 3 m tosses instead of handoffs.

Adaptations

Teacher tip

This game keeps the whole fielding team active on every play, which makes it a great way to introduce baseball. Rotate batters quickly so there's no downtime.
