Beanbag Egg Toss: One Step Back
A school version of the classic picnic egg toss: partners toss a beanbag as if it were a raw egg, and after every good catch the thrower takes one step back. Students work on soft catching, adjusting throwing force, and cooperation.
How to play
- Students pair up, one beanbag per pair, in two facing lines 3 ft apart marked with cones (2 min).
- Teach an underhand toss and a two-hand catch that gives with the arms toward the chest so the egg doesn't break (2 min).
- On the signal, partners toss; after a clean catch, the thrower steps back. If the egg hits the ground, it breaks and the pair returns to 3 ft (4 min).
- Grand finale: all pairs toss and step back together on each whistle. The pair with the longest distance and an unbroken egg wins (3 min).
- Repeat with new partners, catching with the non-dominant hand only (3 min).
Rules
- Always toss underhand and only on the whistle.
- An egg that bounces on the ground or gets slammed against the body counts as broken.
- Keep at least 6 ft between pairs side by side.
Variations
Easier
Use a large soft ball and step back half a step.
Standard
Underhand beanbag toss, one step back per catch.
Harder
Catch with one hand or on a paper plate without grabbing.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student tosses and catches seated while the partner steps back.
- Visual impairment: use a beanbag with a bell, and the partner says "Ready!" before tossing.
- Advanced students: toss overhand with a high arc.
Learning goals
- Absorb the catch by giving with the arms.
- Adjust throwing force to the distance.
- Work with a partner to improve together.
Equipment for a class of 25
- beanbags: 13
- cones: 10
Teacher tip
Tell students to catch the egg "like it's hot and about to crack"; it's the cue that improves catching most. On hot days you can finish outside with water balloons.
