Beach Volleyball Shots: Pokey and Cut Shot
On sand or a hard court, students learn two beach volleyball shots used because open-hand tips are not allowed: the pokey, which drops the ball just over the net, and the cut shot crosscourt. They work on accurate contact and reading open space.
How to play
- Explain that open-hand fingertip tips are illegal in beach volleyball and demonstrate both shots: knuckles bent pushing over the top of the ball, and a cut shot with an open palm and wrist turn (3 min).
- Trios per half court: a tosser at the net, a hitter, and a defender on the other side. Place two hoops: one tight to the net crosscourt and one deep down the line.
- Phase 1 (6 min): the tosser sets the ball high and the hitter, with no jump or a small jump, plays a pokey to the hoop by the net.
- Phase 2 (6 min): same setup, but with a crosscourt cut shot to the hoop by the net. Rotate roles every 5 balls.
- Phase 3 (5 min): the defender starts in the middle and steps to one side just before contact; the hitter must choose the shot that goes away from them.
Rules
- Shots are played with the knuckles or an open palm only; fingertip tips are a fault.
- On sand, everyone helps clear rocks or objects from the area before starting.
- The defender does not dive in this activity: stay on your feet and read.
Variations
Easier
Hit from a standing position on a low toss close to the net.
Standard
Pokey and cut shot with a small jump on a tossed ball.
Harder
The ball comes from a real pass and set by the trio.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: work on a hard court, hitting standing or seated on a ball tossed very close.
- Visual impairment: high-contrast hoops, and the defender claps to signal their position.
- Developing players: a soft ball and a lower net for more time.
Learning goals
- Perform a pokey and a cut shot with intent.
- Choose the shot based on where the defender is.
- Understand beach-specific volleyball rules.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
If you have no sand, run it on the court with a regular volleyball. A common mistake is a stiff hand on the cut shot: cue the wrist to slice across the side of the ball.
