Batuka: Fitness Routine with Latin and African Rhythms
Batuka is a group fitness class that blends rhythms such as merengue, samba, kuduro, cumbia and salsa with simple, repetitive steps. Students dance a full session in song-length blocks and identify where each rhythm comes from.
How to play
- Merengue block: march, arms and gentle turns to warm up (5 min).
- Samba block: basic samba step and arm movements, with a no-bounce option (5 min).
- Kuduro block: strong leg steps and side shuffles with arms in guard (5 min).
- Salsa and cumbia block: salsa basic, cross steps and the cumbia back step with a turn (6 min).
- Final high-energy block with the steps the class voted for (5 min).
- Cool down with marching while each student writes down their favorite rhythm and its country of origin (4 min).
Rules
- Everyone dances at their own intensity, and there is always a low-impact version.
- Keep an arm's length of space in every direction.
- Anyone can swap a step for the basic march without explaining why.
- Drink water between blocks; one student runs the stopwatch for breaks.
Variations
Easier
One-song blocks with active rest in between.
Standard
Five linked rhythm blocks with a final cool-down.
Harder
Blocks run back to back without pauses, and a group of students leads the final block.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: every block in an upper-body version.
- Hearing impairment: a classmate up front signals each block change with the arms.
- Overweight: low-impact option for every step and active rest by marching.
Learning goals
- Sustain continuous, motivating aerobic activity throughout a group class.
- Recognize rhythms of Latin and African origin and where they come from.
- Discover dance fitness as an active option for free time.
Equipment for a class of 25
- speaker: 1
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
Put together a playlist of about 25 minutes with medium- and high-tempo songs. Outdoors, keep the speaker with its back to the wind and in the shade if it's hot.
