Basketball: Transition Defense After the Shot
A full-court 4v4 basketball game where, on every shot, two attackers must sprint back on defense and only two may crash the boards. Students work on balancing offensive rebounding with transition defense and stopping the fast break.
How to play
- Teams of 4 in pinnies plus a spare team; each team chooses its two "safeties" (the players who get back) for each half (2 min).
- Walk-through (3 min): on every shot, the safeties sprint past half court; one gets in front of the ball to slow it and the other protects the basket.
- 4v4 game (2 x 6 min): if the other team scores on the break within 6 seconds of the rebound, it earns 3 points; safeties earn 1 point for their team each time they stop a break and force a half-court set.
- New safeties each half, and the spare team rotates in.
- Debrief (2 min): how many breaks did you stop, and what happened when three players crashed the boards?
Rules
- Only two players per team may go for the offensive rebound.
- Safeties slow the ball with defensive slides, with no grabbing or pushing the dribbler.
- Once the ball crosses half court, play is free.
Variations
Easier
Only one safety and no time limit on the break.
Standard
Two safeties and the break worth 3 points.
Harder
Safeties are not set in advance: the shooter calls two names while shooting.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: is always the safety protecting the basket and starts near half court.
- Hearing impairment: you raise an arm on each shot as the signal to get back.
- Lower fitness: is a safety only one half, to balance the workload.
Learning goals
- Organize transition defense after every shot.
- Slow the ball and protect the basket while outnumbered.
- Balance the risk of offensive rebounding as a team.
Equipment for a class of 25

- Basketball hoops: 2
- Pinnies: 13
- Cones: 8

Teacher tip
At first everyone watches the shot: call "Safeties!" out loud the first few times. Rotate the safeties often, since they sprint constantly.
