Basketball Scorer's Table: Scorebook, Clock, and Possession Arrow
Half-court 3v3 games where the students not playing run the official scorer's table: a scorekeeper with a running score, a timekeeper, and an official for fouls and the alternating possession arrow. It builds focus, teamwork and rules knowledge.
How to play
- Explain the table with a sample scoresheet: the scorekeeper keeps the running score with the scorer's number, the timekeeper stops the clock on every whistle and the third official tracks fouls and turns a cone as the possession arrow (4 min).
- Set up two half courts. Each one has two teams of 4 (3 on the court and one sub), one referee and three table officials (2 min).
- Three 4-minute periods; subs check in at the table on a dead ball and every held ball goes by the arrow (13 min).
- After each period, the table goes in to play and a team takes the table; the referee changes (included in the time above).
- Check: scorekeeper, referee and captains compare the scoresheet result (2 min).
- Debrief: what got missed most often? Agree on one tip for each official (4 min).
Rules
- Starting with the fourth team foul in a period, every foul gives two free throws.
- The clock starts when a player on the court touches the ball.
- The table never argues with the referee: they signal and the referee decides.
- Safety: the table sits 2 m (6 ft) back from the sideline.
Variations
Easier
The scorekeeper tracks points only; the teacher handles fouls and clock.
Standard
Full three-person table with scoresheet, clock and arrow.
Harder
Add a fourth official running a shot clock, cut to 20 seconds for half court.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: serves as scorekeeper or timekeeper consistently and plays one period with an undefended zone of their own.
- Autism or need for structure: a scoresheet with large boxes and a single task per period.
- Advanced players: the scorekeeper also tracks assists and rebounds.
Learning goals
- Fill out a basketball scoresheet without errors.
- Coordinate the clock, fouls and possession with the referee.
- Value the work of table officials in competition.

Teacher tip
The usual mistake is forgetting to stop the clock: have the referee make the stop-clock signal very visibly.
