Basketball 2-on-1 Fast Break Waves
Two attackers push the ball up from half court against one defender waiting under the basket. Students learn to draw the defender with the dribble, make the pass at the right moment and finish with a layup using the numbers advantage.
How to play
- Split the class in half, one group per basket. At each basket set up three lines at half court: two attacking lines on the wings and one defensive line under the rim (5 min with demo).
- The first defender steps into the lane; on the whistle, the first two attackers advance by dribbling or passing without traveling.
- The ball handler drives at the defender: if the defender steps up, pass to the open teammate; if not, take it to the rim.
- After a basket or a steal, the last attacker who touched the ball becomes the next defender and the defender joins an attacking line.
- Play for 8 minutes keeping score for each group; a basket after a pass is worth 2 points and a straight drive is worth 1.
- Finish with 5 minutes where a second defender chases from half court, leaving 3 seconds late.
Rules
- Traveling and double-dribble rules apply; a violation gives the ball to the defender.
- The defender may only go for the ball, never grab or push.
- Each wave must finish within 8 seconds.
- No group starts until the previous wave has cleared the lane, to avoid collisions under the basket.
Variations
Easier
The defender starts sitting on the baseline and may only get up once the attackers cross the free-throw line.
Standard
Two attackers against one defender from half court with 8 seconds to score.
Harder
Three attackers against two defenders, with one defender chasing from the half-court line.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: act as the fixed outlet passer on the sideline, or play with a foam ball and a lowered hoop.
- Students with autism or shy students: keep them in the same line with a steady partner and announce role changes ahead of time.
- Lower fitness levels: allow a long outlet pass from half court to shorten the run.
Learning goals
- Decide whether to pass or shoot based on the defender's position.
- Draw the defender with the dribble before passing.
- Finish a layup on the run with either hand.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 6
- basketball hoops: 2
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is passing too early; keep cueing "attack the defender until they commit." Use cones to mark the running lanes.
