Basketball: 1-2-1-1 Zone Press and Traps
A 5v5 basketball game where the defense presses full court in a 1-2-1-1 zone and tries to trap the ball handler with two defenders near the sideline. Students work on organized pressure, double-teams, and rotating after the pass.
How to play
- Use cones on the court (3 min) to show the five spots: one guards the inbound, two take away the first passes, one covers midcourt, and the last protects the basket.
- Walk-through 5v5 (4 min): the offense inbounds from the baseline and passes slowly; the defense practices the trap in the sideline corner while the others rotate toward the ball.
- Press game (2 x 6 min): the pressing team earns 2 points for a steal before half court and 1 for forcing an 8-second violation; the offense earns 1 point for crossing half court and 2 if it also scores.
- Teams switch roles each half, and the spare team comes on.
- Debrief (3 min): where was the trap easiest, and which pass beat the press?
Rules
- In the trap, use your body and high hands; no grabbing or slapping the ball out of an opponent's hands.
- The inbound must be made within 5 seconds or the ball turns over.
- Once the ball crosses half court, the defense drops into a 2-3 zone.
Variations
Easier
Press only up to half court, with no trap on the inbound.
Standard
Full-court 1-2-1-1 with points for steals.
Harder
The offense gets only two dribbles per player, forcing passes against the press.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays the deep safety spot near the basket, which covers less ground.
- Hearing impairment: the press is signaled by raising a pinnie instead of a call.
- Lower fitness: plays 3 minutes and rests 1 using free substitutions.
Learning goals
- Run a full-court zone press with clear roles.
- Trap the ball handler without fouling.
- Beat the press with quick passes to the middle.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Basketballs: 4
- Basketball hoops: 2
- Pinnies: 13
- Cones: 8
- Whistle: 1
Teacher tip
Students tend to chase the ball all at once and leave gaps: stress that each player guards a zone. The press is exhausting, so sub every 3 minutes.
