Basic Knots Relay
A team relay in which each runner reaches a station, ties the knot shown on a card and runs back; the knot is checked before it scores. Students learn the square knot, figure eight, bowline and clove hitch while working on accuracy under time pressure.
How to play
- Spend 6 minutes teaching four knots step by step: square knot, figure eight, bowline and a clove hitch around a cone. Every student practices with their own rope.
- Make 6 teams of 4 in lines. About 15 yards away, set up one station per team with 4 ropes and a stack of cards each naming a knot.
- On the signal, the first runner sprints to the station, flips a card, ties that knot and raises a hand. A checker from another team inspects the knot.
- If it is correct, the runner unties it, runs back and tags the next teammate; if not, they retie it. Each correct knot is one point.
- Play 2 rounds of 4 minutes. Checkers rotate every round so everyone practices inspecting knots.
- Final round: the team ties all 4 knots on one long rope, each member tying one, as fast as possible.
Rules
- A knot scores only if the checker approves it.
- Ropes are never thrown, swung at others or used to tie up classmates.
- Run in separate lanes and tag off past the cone.
- Untie every knot before returning so the station is ready.
Variations
Easier
Use only the square knot and figure eight, with a picture guide at the station.
Standard
Use all 4 knots with no picture guide.
Harder
Tie the knots with eyes closed or around a post at waist height.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student serves as a permanent checker or ties knots at a table by the starting line.
- Visual impairment: use thick two-color ropes to tell the working end from the standing part, and guide hands while learning.
- Fine motor difficulties: allow a thicker rope and a choice between two knots.
Learning goals
- Tie four basic outdoor knots correctly.
- Check the safety of a knot tied by someone else.
- Keep hand accuracy under time pressure.
Equipment for a class of 25
- ropes: 25
- cones: 12
- cards: 24
Teacher tip
Explain what each knot is used for in camping or climbing; students remember them better. Use ropes about 5 feet long and 3/8 inch thick, and never allow anyone to put a rope around their neck.
