Barter Market Trading Game
Five villages each produce one resource and need all five to build a house, so their traders run to other villages to barter. In round two, coins appear and the class compares both ways of trading. Students practice endurance, negotiation, and the history of trade.
How to play
- Set 5 large hoops on the field, one in each corner and one in the middle, about 65 feet apart. Each hoop is a village with 20 cards of its resource: wheat, salt, wool, lumber, or fish (3 min).
- Make 5 teams of 5. In each village, 2 students are sellers who stay home and the other 3 are traders who run to other villages.
- Goal: collect sets of five different cards. Each complete set is a house. A trader carries one card to another village and swaps it for a card there if the seller agrees.
- Sellers may ask for two cards for one if their resource is running low. Every 3 minutes, sellers and traders switch roles (8 min).
- Round two: each village gets 10 coin cards. Now any resource can be bought with coins at the price the seller sets (5 min).
- Class discussion: each village counts its houses and explains which system made trading easier and why money appeared in history (4 min).
Rules
- Carry only one card in your hand per trip.
- Nobody grabs cards: every trade must be agreed to by both sides.
- Run around the outside of the hoops and slow down before reaching a village.
Variations
Easier
Three villages, three resources, and sets of three cards.
Standard
Five villages, bartering in round one and coins in round two.
Harder
Add event cards such as a storm that destroys half the lumber or a tax collected by the lord of the land.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: serve as their village's seller for the whole activity and set the prices.
- Shy students or students with autism: trade with a partner and use sentence starters like "I'll trade you salt for wool."
- Fitness level: spread the villages farther apart for students who need more running, or let traders speed-walk.
Learning goals
- Understand how bartering and money work as ways to trade.
- Negotiate respectfully and reach agreements with other groups.
- Sustain steady effort with repeated runs back and forth.
Equipment for a class of 25
- resource and coin cards: 150
- hoops: 5
- cones: 10
Teacher tip
Expect long negotiations and a few frustrations; agree beforehand that every trade ends with a handshake.
