Balloon Volleyball 3v3 with a No-Man's Land
A 3v3 balloon volleyball game where a 6-foot strip, the no-man's land, separates the two sides and the balloon cannot land there. Students must hit high and deep with both hands and work as a team to cover their own side.
How to play
- Set up 4 courts about 20×13 feet: on each, two ropes at 6 feet high, 6 feet apart, form the no-man's land, marked on the floor with cones (3 min).
- Teams of 3 per court, one balloon per game; the back player serves by tossing the balloon up and hitting it with an open hand.
- Each team may use up to 3 touches, no player touching twice in a row, and must send the balloon over both ropes.
- A point is scored when the balloon lands on the other side; if it lands in the no-man's land or doesn't clear the second rope, the other team scores.
- Games last 4 min; on the whistle, winners move up one court and the other team moves down one (4 rounds, 16 min).
- After each point won, the scoring team rotates one spot so everyone serves and plays in the back.
Rules
- Hit only with hands or forearms; never catch or hold the balloon.
- Nobody steps into the no-man's land: it stays empty so no one collides under the ropes.
- Call "Mine!" before going for the balloon so you don't run into a teammate.
- If a balloon pops, stop the game and continue with a spare.
Variations
Easier
Shrink the no-man's land to 3 feet and allow one touch with any body part.
Standard
A 6-foot strip, up to 3 touches, and the balloon must clear both ropes.
Harder
Require 2 touches before sending it over, and the last one must be a two-hand hit above the forehead.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays seated on a bench next to the rope, and their touch counts double if the team wins the point.
- Autism or shyness: starts on a cooperative court where the goal is counting passes without the balloon dropping, then joins the league.
- Highly skilled students: must hit with their non-dominant hand only.
Learning goals
- Hit the balloon high and deep by controlling force.
- Move to get under the balloon before hitting it.
- Follow the game rules and the rotation order.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balloons: 12
- long ropes: 8
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
Good-quality balloons that are slightly underinflated fly more steadily; keep 8 spares. Remind students to watch the balloon, not the rope, as they hit.
