Balloon Twins Walk
In pairs, kids hold a balloon between them with different body parts and walk together around the gym and over ropes without dropping it. They work on shared dynamic balance, matching steps, and cooperation.
How to play
- Blow up the balloons before class. Pair up the kids and give each pair a balloon. Lay four straight ropes around the gym. Demonstrate with a child: balloon between your hands, walking sideways slowly.
- Balloon in hands: facing each other, they hold the balloon between all four palms and walk sideways around the gym. 2 minutes.
- Balloon on tummies: no hands, the balloon between their tummies. They walk sideways very slowly. If it falls, they pick it up and start again. 3 minutes.
- Balloon on shoulders or backs: side by side with the balloon between shoulders; then back to back. Clap to switch. 3 minutes.
- Balloon bridge: holding the balloon between their hands, they cross a floor rope together, one on each side of it or both on top. 3 minutes.
- Finish: pairs sit down and hug the balloon together. 1 minute.
Rules
- Squeeze the balloon gently so it doesn't pop.
- Walk slowly and talk to your buddy: "step, step."
- If the balloon falls, it's nobody's fault: pick it up and keep going.
- Leave room for the other pairs.
Variations
Easier
Balloon between hands, walking forward and back.
Standard
Balloon on tummies, walking sideways.
Harder
Balloon on backs or foreheads, crossing the ropes.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the balloon is held between the hand of the child in the wheelchair and the hand of the buddy walking alongside.
- Hearing sensitivity or autism: keep a fixed partner and swap the balloon for a soft ball if popping noises are upsetting.
- More skilled kids try trios with two balloons; kids who need support use a bigger balloon, hands only.
Learning goals
- Keep balance while moving alongside a partner.
- Match steps with a partner.
- Cooperate to take care of a shared object.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balloons: 12
- ropes: 4
Teacher tip
Keep spare inflated balloons in a bag; some will pop. Warn kids about the possible noise so nobody gets scared.
