Balloon to Shuttle Rally Ladder
A station progression where pairs level up by reaching a rally goal: first with a balloon, then with a foam ball, and finally with a badminton shuttle. Each pair moves at its own pace, sets goals, and works on racket strokes that get faster at every level.
How to play
- Stretch a long rope about 5 ft high between two posts or tall cones and split it with cones into three zones: balloon zone, foam ball zone, and shuttle zone (3 min).
- All pairs start in the balloon zone, one partner on each side of the rope, about 6 ft away, each with a racket (1 min).
- Goal for each zone: 10 hits in a row over the rope; when they make it, the pair raises their rackets, the teacher checks, and they move on to the next zone (12 min).
- In the shuttle zone, the goal rises to 15 hits, and if they pass it, they take one step back from the rope and try again.
- Every 4 minutes, pause for 30 seconds so pairs share which zone they're in and what goal they're going for next.
Rules
- A hit only counts if the object goes over the rope.
- The pair decides when to try to level up, but only moves up after reaching the full goal.
- Safety: each pair stays 6 ft from the next pair and no one enters another zone to get equipment.
- If a pair struggles in a zone, they may drop back to the previous one with no penalty.
Variations
Easier
Lower the goal in each zone to 6 hits in a row.
Standard
Ten hits with balloon and foam ball and fifteen with the shuttle to level up.
Harder
In the shuttle zone, every hit must be overhead.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays seated with a short-handled racket, and the rope is lowered on that section.
- Autism: use a poster with the three zones drawn so the student can see where they are and what's left.
- Lower skill level: may stay in the first two zones with the goal of beating their own streak.
Learning goals
- Adapt the stroke to objects moving at different speeds.
- Set realistic partner goals and recognize progress.
- Work with a partner to keep a continuous rally going.

Teacher tip
This progression works great for classes with mixed abilities because no one gets bored. Keep spare shuttles: they wear out fast when stepped on.
