Balloon Time Bomb Racket Game
Two teams on either side of a rope hit a balloon back and forth with rackets, knowing it's a 'time bomb' with a secret timer: when the signal goes off, the team with the balloon on its side loses the round. Students practice quick strokes, reaction, and handling the pressure.
How to play
- Stretch a long rope about 5 ft high across the space and split the class into 4 teams of 6, playing two games at once on halves marked with cones (3 min).
- Each team spreads out on its side with a racket per player, and there is one balloon per game (1 min).
- The teacher starts a stopwatch with a secret time between 20 and 60 seconds; teams hit the balloon over the rope, up to three touches per team, with no player touching it twice in a row.
- When the whistle blows, the team that has the balloon on its side or let it drop loses the round and the other team scores 1 point (8 min).
- After every 3 rounds, teams switch opponents and sides (2 min).
Rules
- Up to three touches per team before sending the balloon over.
- If the balloon drops before the signal, pick it up and keep playing from that side.
- Safety: hit only the balloon, call 'mine', and no one goes under the rope.
- Every team member must touch the balloon at least once per round.
Variations
Easier
Make the bomb timer longer and allow unlimited touches.
Standard
A secret time of 20 to 60 seconds and three touches per team.
Harder
One touch per team only, and play with two balloons at once.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student stands by the rope and teammates set the balloon to that zone; their touch counts double.
- Hearing impairment: also signal the end of a round by raising both arms or showing a red card.
- Anxiety or shyness: the student can start as the stopwatch keeper next to the teacher and then join the game.
Learning goals
- Hit the balloon quickly and with direction to send it over.
- React to an unexpected signal.
- Handle game pressure without rushing.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balloons: 4
- rackets: 24
- long rope: 1
- cones: 8
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
Don't let students see the stopwatch: the uncertainty is the fun. If a team starts swinging hard, remind them the rope is high so the balloon should go up and over.
